The Epworth Fire Department responded to a chimney fire. The Dubuque County E911 Center received the call at 9:58 PM on Tuesday April 13th for a chimney fire at the Larry Simon residence located on New Melleray Road in Vernon Township. The home owner stated he had a fire in his chimney. Epworth 708 arrived on scene within minutes and reported sparks/flames from the chimney. Upon investigation, crews found smoke in the house as well as flames shooting out the chimney. Firefighters were sent to the roof, the attic, the basement and on both floors of the two-story home to look for fire extension. The crews on the roof and in basement worked hard to extinguish the fire and clear the flue of the burning obstruction. Attack lines were implemented, however no water was used to extinguish the fire. Twenty two firefighters were on scene for about 90 minutes working to put the fire out and unblock the chimney flue. There was minor smoke damage to the interior of the home and damage to the chimney flue. There were not reports of injury.
