By Chief Thomas Berger
March 29, 2026

The Epworth Fire Department is deeply saddened and offers condolences to the family of retired Captain Wilbur “Bill” Hartman who passed away Sunday, March 29, 2026 at the age of 91. Wilbur served on the Epworth Fire Department for 25 years from 1958 - 1983. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1965 and to Captain in 1970 - a position he held for thirteen years until his retirement from active duty in 1983. Wilbur was among the many members who worked diligently to build the old fire station in 1972-1973. He was a dedicated volunteer who responded to many calls in the 25 years he served. Wilbur also served many terms on the board of directors for the Epworth Community Volunteer Firemen, INC. He served terms as Vice-President and President.

Wilbur was an active member in the community, coaching many area kids little league baseball and other sports. He also served multiple terms on the Epworth City Council. Wilbur’s calm demeanor was instrumental in keeping the peace among the ranks of the department. He was well respected among his fellow firefighters and always willing to help train new members. There are many stories we are unable to publish how Wilbur was able to calm down the fire chief who was often in the process of losing his cool. In retirement, Wilbur enjoyed the fire department events and never turned down a good game of six handed euchre with the other retired members of the department.

He will be missed by all his family, friends, firefighters, and neighbors. Wilbur, we thank you for your service and may you rest in peace.

Arrangements are pending at Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth.
