The Epworth Fire Department is deeply saddened and offers condolences to the family of retired Captain Dorrance McDermott who passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at the age of 90. Dorrance served on the Epworth Fire Department for 25 years from 1962 - 1988. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1976 and to Captain in 1979 - a position he held for nine years until his retirement from active duty. Dorrance was among the many members who worked so hard to build the old fire station in 1972-1973. He was a dedicated volunteer who responded to many calls in the 25 years he served. Working third shift at John Deere, driving school bus, and living directly across from the fire station made Dorrance an easy target to complete tasks during the daytime hours when the fire chief needed something. Dorrance continued to contribute to the fire department with his wood working skills and helping complete many projects well into his retirement. Dorrance was a crowd favorite at the firemen’s dances when he would reluctantly join the band and yodel and sing a few songs. He was a headliner at our last dance in the old fire station as well as playing with the Trouble City Band at our 100-year anniversary in 2011. Dorrance along with Verna, made almost daily trips to the fire station to exercise, stopping to chat with anyone he encountered. Tuesday was no different, he was exercising and walking around the fire trucks in the apparatus bay earlier in the day. He will be missed by all his family, friends, firefighters, and neighbors. Dorrance, we thank you for your service and may you rest in peace.

Arrangements are pending at Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth.
