On Saturday, May 7th, 2011, the Dubuque County E911 Center received a report of an ATV accident with multiple injuries at 23525 Old Highway Road just West of Epworth at 2:44 p.m. The Epworth Fire Department and EMS responded along with mutual aid ambulances from Farley EMS. Four people including three children were injured and transported to Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque with various injuries. The Dubuque County Sheriffs Office responded and investigation revealed that the occupants were sitting on the ATV along with three children age three, six and nine when a relative started the ATV not knowing the three-year-old was holding the throttle open. The ATV sped up, hit a tree and rolled. The nine-year-old was airlifted to Iowa City with a head injury all others were treated and released from Mercy Medical Center.
