The Epworth Fire Department was paged out by The Dubuque County E911 Communications Center after a homeowner called 911 to report a fire. At approximately 6:30 PM Wednesday, January 13th, we responded to 614 East Main Street in Epworth for a kitchen fire. Upon arrival, the 1st responding Epworth Fire officer was met by the homeowner who was suffering from burns. The on scene fire officer quickly requested EMS. The homeowner stated he believed he had the fire out. The homeowner was then transported to Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque and later transferred to the burn unit at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Fire damage was contained to the kitchen area with smoke damage throughout the home. Fire units were on scene for about 90 minutes checking for fire extension and clearing the home of smoke.
