The Epworth Community Volunteer Firemen were awarded a 2017 Dubuque Racing Association Grant that allowed for the purchase of a new cardiac monitor / defibrillator for the paramedic ambulance service.

The new state of the art piece of equipment will help medics by allowing cardiac rhythm interpretation and advanced cardiac life support interventions to begin immediately in the pre-hospital setting. The medics are able to transmit the results to the local hospitals which can decrease the time the patient waits for cardiac interventions.

The DRA provided a $5,000.00 grant to purchase the new cardiac monitor. The total cost of the project was over $27,000.00. The department also allocated some of the funds from the annual fund raising dance. The department will be looking to fund the remaining balance through donations, memorials and other gifts to the department. Including this grant, the Dubuque Racing Association has awarded over $119,700.00 to the Epworth Community Volunteer Firemen over the past twenty years.

The Epworth Community Volunteer Firemen is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation comprised of the volunteers who respond to emergencies in and around the Epworth area and was founded in 1911. The Epworth Community Volunteer Firemen is a separate non profit organization from the Epworth Community Fire Department who are the actual Board of Directors representing the rural area the department protects. The rural board also received a $6,335 grant from the DRA to purchase essential firefighting equipment.
